If you are employed as a zoning professional, you can earn certification through VAZO:
Certified Zoning Official (CZO)
Focuses on the legal aspects of zoning and the technical aspects of zoning and zoning practices. Members must pass a Technical exam and a Legal exam to achieve this title.
Certified Zoning Administrator (CZA)
Focuses on management practices. Members must achieve the title of Certified Zoning Official (CZO) and pass a Management exam to achieve this title.
The Certified Transportation Manager (CTM) (temporarily suspended)
Focuses on transportation management and its coordination with land use and zoning. Members must pass the transportation and management exam to achieve this title.
Recertification
The professional CZA, CZO and CTM, in this ever changing profession, must expand their knowledge base yearly to stay abreast of innovations in land use laws, construction and environmental laws, and development trends. To fill this need and to insure that holders of the title CZA, CZO and CTM diligently attend regular training, the certification program expanded to provide for expiration of the certifications. Re-certification requirements are based upon attending certain required and other optional training programs. Through conferences, workshops, and the certification program, VAZO provides the zoning professional with information and training on an annual basis to help keep them in step with the changes in the profession.
