We encourage excellence, innovation, and professionalism in the area of zoning administration, code enforcement, and planning or community development. As part of this on going goal, recognition of individual members is encouraged. The Awards Committee will announce the winners of this year’s awards at the Fall Conference.
Nominee Eligibility Requirements
  • Active Member of VAZO
  • Currently employed with a municipal government in the enforcement and or
    administration of local zoning ordinances and associated codes and regulations.
  • Minimum of two years service in the position.
 
Who can make the nomination?
Nominations may be submitted by an active:  Zoning Official, Nominee’s Supervisor, Municipal CEO, member of BZA,Planning Commission, Board of County Supervisors or City/Town Council, or VAZO member.

Administrator of the Year
Award


The determination of this award will be based on the consistency, knowledge and performance in a management capacity as Zoning Administrator, Deputy Zoning Administrator, Zoning Manager, Zoning Supervisor, etc. performing with a clear, concise knowledge on policy; procedures; code interpretation; and enforcement. The nominee manages, prioritizes and successfully leads staff in the zoning, planning, and/or land use field. The successful nominee has demonstrated the highest level of leadership, integrity and professionalism.
Certified Zoning Administrator’s Award (CZA)
Certified Zoning Official’s Award (CZO)
The determination of this award will be based on consistency, knowledge and performance in the field of code interpretation and enforcement. An active government employee who has passed the formal written exam and has served two consecutive years as a Certified Zoning Administrator that demonstrated consistency in their interpretation and enforcement of the local zoning ordinances and has an demonstrated knowledge of the application of Virginia State enabling legislation.

The nominee, as part of their duties, demonstrated innovative programs, or problem-solving techniques relating to saving time, money, life, or can be directly attributed to being a benefit to the community.
The determination of this award will be based on the nominee’s knowledge of the local zoning ordinances and associated codes/regulations, and applicable local, state and federal laws. An active zoning inspector, field officer, zoning, planning or community development staff member that supports the position of Zoning Administrator.

The nominee, as part of their duties, demonstrated their ability to interact and coordinate with other departments to correct zoning violations, process applications/cases, resolve citizen conflicts, develop uniform enforcement practices, resulting in lower court appearances, higher compliance ratings, and possess highly effective communication techniques. Current VAZO members with a valid CZA or CZO certification are eligible for this award.
VAZO Service Award
Outstanding Organization Award
The determination of this award will be based on the nominee’s
many years of dedicated service to the VAZO organization.
This award will be presented to an organization or group of individuals for their significant contribution or improvement associated with the zoning or planning profession. The nomination should include a full description of the nominated contribution or improvement and those deserving of the award.
